Form and Function: A Bridge for Everyone PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 July 2010 18:36

By Susanna Grimes and Felicity Perryman

Form ever follows function. Louis Sullivan, 1898

The Johnson Street Bridge has for 86 years been an excellent example of form stripped down to pure function. Opened in January of 1924, it was designed to do what was needed, with one span to carry the Esquimalt & Nanaimo rail line, and another to move the ever-increasing number of cars between downtown Victoria and points west. It is also raised and lowered approximately 1000 times per year to let marine traffic pass through the narrow channel underneath.

Some find the structure ugly, while for many others the modernist and industrial design of the bridge has earned it a place in their hearts. It was nicknamed the “Blue Bridge” after being painted sky blue instead of its original black, in 1979.

Petition to put bike racks on Greyhound buses PDF Print E-mail

A message from Jawn Lafratta, past GVCC Board member:

Greetings fellow cyclists and cycling supporters,

I think it is high time that cyclists on Vancouver Island had an easy option of transporting their bikes up and down the Island without having to rely on a car and with undue inconvenience and cost. I have heard that this has been a goal for many people and organizations for a number of years, but so far nothing has come of it. Perhaps with the combined support of many cycling organizations on Vancouver Island and BC we can make this happen.

GVCC Position on The Galloping Goose Trail in Colwood PDF Print E-mail
Written by Board of Directors
Thursday, 06 May 2010 16:25

The Galloping Goose is a continuous linear corridor with treed buffers that allows walkers and cyclists to move around in a scenic, car-free environment. It is the position of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition (GVCC) that the Goose must remain a safe commuter route and recreational trail, that the trail not be moved from its current location, and that it's park-like character and continuity must be protected. We believe that this former railway corridor must be preserved intact.

A move to a two-way, road-side bike path along Sooke Road will introduce many new hazards, including numerous driveways, a crossing at Goldstream Avenue, and close proximity to fast moving car traffic. This will greatly reduce safety for trail users. The proposed changes would destroy the integrity of this important recreation and commuting resource and sets a dangerous precedent for others who desire to partition the trail for their own purposes.

GVCC Weekly Leisure Rides PDF Print E-mail
Written by Darren

Due to popular demand, the GVCC weekly leisure rides are back!

Many experienced GVCC members may recall the former Sunday sport rides that used to originate from the Moka House Café in Cook Street Village. These rides aim to follow that spirit, with an added emphasis of providing a comfortable riding experience for all riding levels. These rides also tend to be less structured than the GVCC’s themed rides.

Rides typically start at 10:00 on Sunday at Selkirk Station, 80 Regatta Landing in the Railyards development in Vic West. However, this may be subject to change depending on the nature of the ride or other conditions.

For more information about the weekly rides program or to check on the status of a ride, please contact Darren at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or check out our Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=43874934725.

For weekly ride updates or reminders, please forward your email address to Darren and you can be put on the riders list. This way, you won’t miss a ride!
